Don't Miss Race for the Cure This Weekend!

October 25, 2012 4:05 pm

This weekend – specifically, October 27th – marks the 29th annual Komen Race for the Cure. Our local race, Race for the Cure OKC, has already raised over $600,000 to fund grassroots screening and educational programs for 6 local organizations. It’s also raised almost $250,000 for national research funded by the Foundation.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the global leader of the breast cancer movement. It began with Susan herself, who spent her time in hospitals and treatment centers thinking of ways to improve life for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Although Susan didn’t survive, her sister, Nancy G. Brinker, founded the organization in 1982 in Susan’s honor. Since then, the Foundation has raised over $1 billion to promote breast cancer awareness, prevention, research, and treatment across the nation.

At Van de Steeg and Associates, we fundraise for the Susan G. Komen Foundation year-round. You know the spiel: when you buy a new roof from us, we donate a portion of our proceeds to the Foundation. (Yes, even if you don’t opt for a pink roof.)

Race for the Cure is a great way to give to the cause very actively—much more affecting than donating online or through the mail. If you’ve never participated in Race for the Cure, you should consider making this year your first. It’s a truly eclectic mix of people: serious athletes and enthusiastic first-timers alike come out. And every one of them is decked out in pink. The crowd is usually very exuberant and enthusiastic. But it’s also a very emotional experience: lots of the participants are survivors themselves, or family members of people diagnosed with breast cancer.

How about it? A crisp autumn jog, an excuse to wear bright pink, and something you can really feel good about. All the info is on the Central and Western Oklahoma Affiliate’s website. (Scroll down and see the “Sleep in for the Cure” option.) You can register online here or in person at the downtown Komen Affiliate Office or Red Coyote on Classen Curve.
